Sports Coaching Pedagogy

This unit has given me the oppurtunity to expand my coaching knowledge and skills and to be able to apply these within a practical situation. I have been able to transfer the knowledge I have gained within this unit to my placement, through the Net Set Go program and to my own sport of netball as well. I have learned to look at coaching from a wider point of view, in that being coach isnt just about helping athletes within their sports but it is just as important to be a friend, a mentor, a proffessional and a role model. I will continue to these skills in the future within my sports studies career.

Placement

I am back at my placment after the school holidays and I am amazing at one of the athletes and how she has improved over the break. She is throwing further, has improved in her coordination within her throwing events and seems so much more confidnet in herself.

Sometimes it is better for athletes to have some time off from training so they get a balance between training, school, life and time for themselves. I am working with her on developing her strength and power within her throwing events and before each training session we spent some time using thero bands and completing exercises which develope her core strength: so abdominal curls, plank as well as balancing exercises to help with her ankle.

I feel so rewarded to be working with her and to see her improve so much and I hope that I have had something to do with her improvements.

Constant Coaching

I believe that for a tacher or coach to beccome an expert pedagogue they need to continually practice within their feild. They need to coach sessions and classes repeatidly, this way they are able to see what works for them as indiviuals and what needs to be improved for their next sessions or classes.

I haven't been at the primary schools doing netball coaching for about 2 weeks now and I feel that I am missing out on valuable coaching time. I miss seeing the students on a weekly basis, now I feel that they will not be as close to me and the personal relationship between us will not be as strong.

I will have to revise the differnt drills within the coaching sessions once again to refamiliarise myself the entire session.
I cant wait to start again next week

Occupation, Vocation Week 13

Vocation: Self clarification and knowledge.

Observing: Novices will gain a tremendous amount from watching an experienced pedagogue, whether a coach or teacher. Often watching someone perform in action gives a clearer understanding than when it is in writing.

I find that before coaching a session I often ask my coach what they would do and then watch them do it. This gives me a clearer understanding of the aims of my session, and therefore I find it easier to coach a session.
